Matty watched the girl struggle for a moment before running across the street towards her. “It looks like you’re in trouble there. Can I help?”
Startled the girl jumped bumping her head into the trunk lid in the process. “Ouch” she said rubbing her head frowning at the boy silently laughing at her. “It’s not funny,” she mumbled.
“Do you want help or not?” he asked laughing harder.
“I can do it myself” she turned back to what she had been doing before the boy interrupted her. The tire didn’t look that big but it was proving more difficult than she expected to lug out of her trunk.
“Here let me do that,” the boy pushed her out of the way and hefted the tire out for her. Ignoring her protests he proceeded to change the tire for her. When he had thrown the flat into the trunk he turned around smiling.
“I didn’t need your help. I could have done it myself” she frowned at him.
His smile fading he shrugged and slammed the trunk shut and without another word began to walk away.
“Hey wait…” she called after him. When he stopped and half turned she ran up to him “I’m sorry that was rude of me.” As she ran up to him she noticed for the first time how cute he was and smiled in embarrassment “thank you for helping.”
“You’re welcome” he smiled back noting her green highlights and the freckles scattered across her nose. He extended his hand “I’m Matt, Matthew Bennett.”
Her smile turned into a grin as she took his hand “I’m Payson Oliver….”
