26. How does your character prepare for bed? Do they sleep at all or can they stay awake for days on end without trouble

The usual things I guess like washing his face and brushing his teeth. Then he reads for awhile before turning off the lights. Reading helps him relax especially if he’s working on a big case. Sleep doesn’t come easy to him. It’s like his mind comes alive at night and he gets overloaded with ideas of how he can solve the case he’s working on. He can go for a long time without getting much sleep. He has a driving need to solve cases and he’s willing to sacrifice a little bit of sleep so that others can find peace of mind when he brings the bad guy to justice.

28. Are they afraid of death? Do they have any regrets?

No he’s not afraid of dying but he is concerned how his death would affect his children. He knows how losing one’s parents can change a child’s life and he doesn’t want that for his children if he can at all prevent it. Does that effect how he does his job? No he puts his life on the line every time he takes on a case. He regrets not being able to save his partner’s life. It weighs heavily on his mind that his partner gave his life to save his.

29. Does your character get restless when things are too quiet or do they favour solitude and silence? Why?

Restless yes. He’s come to learn that when things are too quiet that’s when things are about to go horribly wrong. Too much solitude would only give him too much time to dwell on things he’d rather not remember like his parents and how they died in front of him or the family he left behind when he was dragged into another dimension to live a new life. He’d rather things to be constantly happening than to have too much time to dwell on the things he had to leave behind. Can he handle solitude and silence? Yes but he would become withdrawn and irritable.

7.  How does your character feel about their name?

It’s a name…well actually he dislikes being called Jeffrey. It makes if feel like a five year child about to be put into timeout. He prefers Jeff. He has a nickname that only his sister Drew get’s away with calling him …. Jif or Jiffy.

10.  Would your character ever kill someone?

Simple answer is yes but only if it couldn’t be avoided. Being a cop it’s a very real possibility and he has had to use his gun to either protect himself or his partner. Every time he has to use his gun it leaves him feeling sick and the nightmares afterwards is hard to describe….

11.  How did your character meet their best friend?

After the tragedy he had a hard time making friends. He was always that kid whose parents were murdered. I guess you could say he married his best friend who he met at the policy academy and had to hide their relationship so that they wouldn’t be expelled. Later he met Zayne Thompson who became his partner and they became best friends outside of work.

12.  How would/does your character feel about roller coasters?

An amusement park is not an amusement part unless it has a roller coaster. He doesn’t like any other rides and will not ride if he has to sit in the middle. It’s either the very back or the very front. The slow creep up the first hill the momentary hesitation as the car hangs poised on the top as you look down as the car tips over and you plunge down…there’s nothing like it.

13.  What would your character die for?

Without hesitation or second thoughts he would throw himself in front of any danger to protect those he loves. It’s how his dad died pushing his little sister out of harms way. His dad will always be his hero, his role model.

14.  What is the cutest thing your character has ever done?

One evening his dad came home late from meeting with his editor. Going to the refrigerator he pulled out a bottle of beer. Chugging it down he nearly choked as he spewed it exclaiming “it’s flat,” he said in disgust. Turning to Grace he asked “have you been drinking my beer?”

Shaking her head “you know I don’t like beer other than the first couple of swallows.”

“Did you do that and put it back?” Rob asked “I don’t have a problem with you drinking my beer but if you do don’t put it back or at least drink all of it.”

“But dad” Jeff piped up “I can’t drink all of it.”

“You what?” Robert spluttered hoping he had heard him wrong.

“Drink it all,” Jeff repeated.

“You shouldn’t be drinking beer Jeff.”

“I’m not just the stuff in the green bottles,” Jeff told him “It’s really good especially after being outside all day in the heat.”

Jeff remembers how his dad laughed so hard he cried. It was one of the last good times before the tragedy.

18.  How would your character feel about having their life recorded?

He dislikes it but has learned to live with it.

23.  Is your character morally gray or black or white?

Jeff lives in a black and white world. It’s either or good or bad. There are no shades of gray.

27.  What would be the worst way for your character to die?

A stupid pointless meaningless death. He much prefers the death of a hero. Protecting those he loves.

55.  Would your character do the Ice Bucket Challenge?

Yes he would do anything to help others

37. Are they more analytical or more emotional in their decision-making?

When it comes to solving crime he’s definitely more analytical. He has those moments where he has a gut instinct and he goes for it. He’s usually right. His superior’s tell him you can’t become emotional when dealing with the victim. He can’t not feel for the victims and not want to do everything he can to capture the bad guy. He knows all to well what if feels like to be the victim and watch helplessly while someone takes them from you.

38. Would they consider themselves a Type A or Type B personality?

He hates to admit it but he is a Type A personality. Nothing will hold him back when he’s on a mission to solve a crime or protecting his family. He doesn’t know how to quit or admit defeat. He does have a softer side but he only shows it to those he’s let inside his walls.

39. What recharges them when they’re feeling drained?

Being with family. They don’t need to talk but he does need to be near them. To hold them and know they’re alright.

40. Would you say that they have a superiority-complex? Inferiority-complex? Neither?

He’d say neither but if you don’t know him well his Type A personality and dedication to his job has made people to assume he has a superiority complex. His biggest fear though is not being good enough to protect his loved ones.

41. How misanthropic are they?

He’s not. He enjoys being around people he knows well and who know him. In a roomful of strangers he’s very uncomfortable and he puts up a front to keep them at a distance.

42. Hobbies?

Reading. He’s especially interested in researching extrasensory perception. His interest was mainly to find ways to help Amanda but then he started to notice that some of it fit him. The way he can read people and his gut instincts when he is searching for the bad buy. He wouldn’t say he has ESP but he’s definitely more sensitive than other people.

43.  How far did they get in formal education? What are their views on formal education vs self-education?

He attended the police academy upon graduating high school. He’s supportive of anyone going on for more formal education. He does see the need for some self-education.

44. Religion?

Let’s just say he’s angry and doesn’t want anything to do with religion at the moment. He lost his faith when his parents were killed in front of him.

45. Superstitions or views on the occult?

Without a doubt he believes they exist. How could he not? He has many aunts, uncles and cousins that are alien/human hybrids. He has a cousin that is half imaginary friend (Heath). A cousin (Quentin) who is a werewolf and an Uncle (Adam) who is a vampire. Then there’s Amanda who can talk to ghosts and his own experiences in seeing his dad’s ghosts. What he doesn’t understand is why you have to keep it such a secret. In his universe his uncle opened up Moonlight Falls so that there is no need for fear once he overthrew Alessandro ten years ago.

46. Do they express their thoughts through words or deeds?

Both. Sometimes deeds speak louder than words and sometimes the right words fail him and finds he just wants to hold the other person. Lisa always understood that and never questioned his love for her.

47. If they were to fall in love, who (or what) is their ideal?

His ideal is someone who isn’t afraid to say what they think. That was one of the things he appreciated the most about Lisa. She always told him what she was thinking. He likes someone he can argue with without it ending up in a fight. He likes to mentally spar with someone and intelligence is definitely a turn on.

48. How do they express love?

He tells them he loves them everyday. He also has a way of expressing it through how he looks at them and the way he touches their hand or face. In larger ways he does everything within his power to protect his loved ones from harm.

49. If this person were to get into a fist fight, what is their fighting style like?

It depends upon why he’s fighting. If it’s to save someone he loves he wouldn’t fight fair. He would do whatever it took to win. If it was a fight due to a misunderstanding he’d fight fair.

50. Is this person afraid of dying? Why or why not?

Not really. He knows that death isn’t the end necessarily. His biggest fear would be how his death would effect those he was leaving behind.

11. What do they think of creation? Do they believe in evolution or do they believe in God? What is their religion like?

This is a difficult question. He wants to believe in a god that cares but finds it difficult to believe since his parents were killed in front of him.

12. Describe 5 unusual characteristics your muse has.

Hmm I don’t know if these are unusual or not but here goes 1) he believes in ghosts 2) he’s honest to a fault 3) he’s a police officer but dreads having to use his gun in the line of duty 4) his family will always be his first priority 5) he wants to believe there’s good in everybody even the worst criminal.

13. Have they ever been so overwhelmed they had to stop and take a break from something?

He’s been overwhelmed but he refuses to take a break for fear that once he does he won’t be able to face it again.

14. Are they a team player or do they prefer to be solo?

He’s a police officer and he relies upon his partner to have his back as he has their’s. That thinking holds over to his wife, Lisa. So he doesn’t have a lot of people he turns to for help. If his partner or wife can’t help he faces it solo.

15. Can they multi-task or must they focus on one subject at a time?

He has to multi-task otherwise he would never solve any crimes. He has multiple open cases he’s working on at any given time. He wishes he had the time to just focus on case before moving on to the next.

16. What are their best school subjects? What are their worst? List five of each.

Well he’s not school anymore and has blocked most of things he was forced to learn out of his mind. He liked gym and after school sports. He liked history. He disliked literature and math. He took auto mechanics once and decided that he disliked fixing cars and would much rather take his vehicles in to get worked on than doing it himself. Who has time to do that anyway?

17. Is your character an introvert or an extrovert? How do they handle big crowds of people?

He can’t interrogate people if he’s afraid of meeting new people. So he would classify himself as an extrovert with introvert tenancies. He prefers small gatherings of friends to large crowds. Crowds don’t bother him so he would act normally.

18. Are they a leader, do they prefer to follow, or would they rather just stay on the sidelines altogether?

He’s a cop and there are times he has to stand up take the lead. He’s most comfortable taking the lead then following and may butt heads with anyone he thinks is not leading well.

19. If your character was suddenly challenged, would they rather run away or stay and fight?

It depends on what’s at stake but he’s more likely to stay and fight then to run.

20. If your character was allowed to murder one person without any consequences, who would that person be and why?

Without a doubt that would be Patricia his dad’s ex-wife. The person who shot and killed his parents.

Can I hear five random facts about [Jeff]? Once you get this, paste it into 5-10 people’s inboxes whose characters you’d like to know better! 🙂

“Stand By You” by Rachel Platten

(even if we can’t find heaven, heaven, heaven, heaven, heaven, heaven)

Hands, put your empty hands in mine
And scars, show me all the scars you hide
And hey, if your wings are broken
Please take mine so yours can open, too
‘Cause I’m gonna stand by you

Oh, tears make kaleidoscopes in your eyes
And hurt, I know you’re hurting, but so am I
And, love, if your wings are broken
Borrow mine ’til yours can open, too
‘Cause I’m gonna stand by you

Even if we’re breaking down, we can find a way to break through
Even if we can’t find heaven, I’ll walk through Hell with you
Love, you’re not alone, ’cause I’m gonna stand by you
Even if we can’t find heaven, I’m gonna stand by you
Even if we can’t find heaven, I’ll walk through Hell with you
Love, you’re not alone, ’cause I’m gonna stand by you

Yeah, you’re all I never knew I needed
And the heart—sometimes it’s unclear why it’s beating
And, love, if your wings are broken
We can brave through those emotions, too
‘Cause I’m gonna stand by you

Oh, truth—I guess truth is what you believe in
And faith—I think faith is having a reason
And I know now, love, if your wings are broken
Borrow mine ’til yours can open, too
‘Cause I’m gonna stand by you

Even if we’re breaking down, we can find a way to break through
Even if we can’t find heaven, I’ll walk through Hell with you
Love, you’re not alone, ’cause I’m gonna stand by you
Even if we can’t find heaven, I’m gonna stand by you
Even if we can’t find heaven, I’ll walk through Hell with you
Love, you’re not alone, ’cause I’m gonna stand by you

I’ll be your eyes ’til yours can shine
And I’ll be your arms, I’ll be your steady satellite
And when you can’t rise, well, I’ll crawl with you on hands and knees
‘Cause I… I’m gonna stand by you

Even if we’re breaking down, we can find a way to break through (come on)
Even if we can’t find heaven, I’ll walk through Hell with you
Love, you’re not alone, ’cause I’m gonna stand by you
Even if we can’t find heaven, I’m gonna stand by you
Even if we can’t find heaven, I’ll walk through Hell with you
Love, you’re not alone, ’cause I’m gonna stand by you
Love, you’re not alone
Oh, I’m gonna stand by you
(even if we can’t find heaven, heaven, heaven)
Yeah, I’m gonna stand by you

The last chapter of Not So Wild Life was named after this song and this what I imagine Lisa telling Jeff when they finally reunite after he solves the case.
