Trebor – I should have Lied

Braylin felt Trebor’s skate knock into his making him lose stride. “I thought you said you could skate” he grumbled his irritation making his partner come to a jerky stop.

“What do you call this” Trebor demanded hands reaching out for Braylin to steady himself.

“It’s not skating” he huffed.

Dropping his hands to his side Trebor made his ungainly way to the exit from the rink. He stumbled from the ice. Sitting down on a nearby bench muttering to himself as he tugged on the laces to his skate.

“Hey what’s wrong” Braylin asked coming to a stop in front of him.

“I’m going home” his voice thick with repressed emotion. He knew he wasn’t good but he thought he had been doing okay.

“Are you upset” Braylin asked sounding incredulous “if you hadn’t said you know how to skate I would have taken it slower.”

“I do know how to skate” he grumbled “I’m just not very good.” Reaching down he tugged off his skates. “I should have lied. It would have been easier.”

Getting down on his knees Braylin lifted Trebor’s chin up so that they were looking at each other. “Hey. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to make you feel bad. I guess” he shrugged “expected you to better than you are.”

Trebor’s lips twitched a little “I guess I’m not as good as I thought either.”

“You could use a little more practice” Braylin agreed picking up the discarded skate. Holding it for Trebor to put his foot into it he said “shall we start over?”

“I guess” he said sounding doubtful “I can’t guarantee the results will be any different though.”

“At least now I know what to expect” Braylin said lacing the skate up for him.
